Time is of the Essence.
Based on recent 2008 statistics, we are losing World War II veterans at the rate of approximately 1,000 per day. Honor Flight Network will continue do whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of our veterans and help our senior heroes travel absolutely free.
Subsequent to the World War II veterans, our efforts will then focus on our Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans, honoring them similarly.
Honor Flight New England joined with the national organization Honor Flight Network in the Spring of 2009 and is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all of their sacrifices. Through generous donations we transport our heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials AT NO COST TO THE VETERAN. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.
Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation - and as a culturally diverse, free society. Now, with over one thousand World War II veterans dying each day, our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.
Honoring All Our Veterans.
Our first flight was on June 13, 2009. It was a humbling experince to be with these WWII Veterans on our maiden voyage to D.C. Of those 50 Veterans and Guardians traveling with us on board were 14 World War II Prisoners of War and 5 World War II Heroes,
including one hero that lost his sight while serving his country.
Honor Flight New England will also pay tribute to America's other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and it's time we show them that their efforts are not forgotten.
Honor Flight Network has learned a lot over these last four years and one point that stands out is that our veteran heroes aren't asking for recognition. It is our position that they deserve it. Our program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much.
Please help us continue to make their dream of visiting THEIR memorial, a reality.
HONOR FLIGHT NEW ENGLAND — our way of saying to all our veterans — one more TOUR with HONOR.
On April 22, 2012 we travelled to Baltimore for our Honor Flight Adventure. It was a cold, rainy, windy day Maryland day. We did not expect to have our motorcycle escort to the World War II Memorial because of the weather, however we did meet with one amazing man who came to greet us, his name was Doug Tolley. He was there to escort our World War II Veterans to their memorial in Washington DC because, "They Deserved It" he said. He lead us that day, as he did on many occasions in the past and would also lead us on several more after that date, usually accompanied by other motorcyclists. On this day he was the lone rider, we were awestruck by his dedication to the World War II Veterans and the Honor Flight Program. I would like for you to take a moment to a look at the photograph we took of Doug that day and to reflect on how the kindness of others can have an incredible impact on so many.
Doug Tolley passed away of a sudden illness, last week, his service will be held on Thursday.
Rest in Peace Doug, we will never forget what you did for us that day, you will be in our hearts this Sunday when we travel again. |
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Al Gavan EX-POW World War II, Al passed away on March 14, 2013. Al was on our Inaugural Flight on June 13, 2009. This photo of Al appeared at every register of every Ocean Job Lot Store and was an attachment on the coupons their were emailed to their customers. In the last two years, Ocean State Job Lot has orchestrated a campaign to raise money so that we could provide our World War II Veterans with what many describe as One of the Best Days of Their Life. None of this would be possible without the generosity of others and the bravery of our World War II Heroes.
Al continually searched for POW's that were killed in action and their families, he insured that their families were provided the Purple Heart Medal that they had not previously been issued.
As all our World War II Veterans have, Al touched are lives in an indescribable way, these Heroes truly provide us with a lesson in humility, we are HONORED to be in their company.
Thank you Al for what you have done for us, REST IN PEACE, we will miss you. Al's comment about his Honor Flight! "Like the other “longest day” it was an event of our lifetime" |
